Studentnet® White Papers
Studentnet® White Papers offer you the
opportunity to examine a specific topic and its issues in detail, based upon
almost three decades of experience in providing school IT and identity
management services.
Protecting School Communities
May 2023: School communities are no longer simply made up of staff and students
— there are others, such as parents, alumni, governors and volunteers, who are
fundamental to school viability, and whose roles with schools evolve over time.
If schools do not cultivate their own communities, they risk losing valuable
support, influence and funding to the walled gardens of the technology giants,
with all their privacy and security issues. We discuss the importance of
supporting communities, how their roles change, and how to welcome and protect
those people whose contributions are essential, but who are too often taken for
granted.
What is Identity Protection?
September 2022: Schools differ from other organisations when it
comes to technology and cybersecurity. School IT staff manage users across
school communities from Kindergarten to Year 12 students, as well as staff,
families and alumni often numbering in the thousands, with vastly different
levels of technical experience. This paper describes the three contexts
of school security which require protection: operational infrastructure,
personal privacy, and institutional reputation. Identity protection management
builds, monitors and safeguards the boundaries of schools at all levels.

Best Practice Security
February 2022: Schools have a vested interest in maintaining a high degree of
trust with their community and an effective cyber-risk management program is
essential.
As the chosen provider of identity management and
single sign-on services for many leading schools, we can provide unique
insights into what works. Security and usability are often seen as opposed, but
we recommend a pragmatic approach which balances the impact on usability,
student learning and organisational efficiency, which will work for the vast
majority of schools.
